The field of the flag of Portugal is crossed by a vertical line dividing it into two unequal rectangles – a green and a red one. The red rectangle occupying the fly side is wider than the green one in the hoist. At their junction there is a coat of arms consisting of a shield with an internal field and an external field. The former contains 5 five smaller blue shields arranged in a cross, the latter contains 7 golden triple-towered castles. The fields are colored white and red respectively.
